It usually falls in September or October, depending on the lunar calendar. Dashain is a 15-day festival that symbolizes the victory of good over evil and light over darkness.

Specially, Dashain is the greatest festival of Nepal. This greatest festival is celebrated together with relatives and friends. Anger in Dashain reverts to a relationship that is broken. Dashain is a joyous and culturally significant festival in Nepal, rooted in Hinduism but celebrated enthusiastically by people of diverse backgrounds, including the Nepali diaspora.

Dashain Wishes

Dashain is celebrated to commemorate the victory of Goddess Durga over the demon king Mahishasura. The Goddess is worshiped in various forms and forms during the festival period. Many families have a special shrine or temple dedicated to the goddess in their homes.

Tika and Jamara:
On the main day of Dashain, the elders of the family perform a ritual called “Tika” where they apply a mixture of curd, rice and vermilion on the foreheads of the younger family members. Elders tie “jamara” (barley shoots) on the heads of the recipients as a symbol of blessing and protection. It is a way of seeking and giving blessings within the family.

Family Reunions & Flying Kites:
Dashain is a time when families, often from far and wide, come together to celebrate the festival. It is a time for family reunions, feasts, and spending quality time with loved ones. Also, all the families fly kites during Dashain. Flying kites is a popular activity during Dashain, especially among children and youth. It is a way to enjoy clear skies and celebrate with enthusiasm.
