Before the promulgation of the Constitution of 2072, there were 5 development zones, 14 zones and 75 districts in Nepal. But the second constitution of Nepal which was announced on Bhadra 20, 2073 divided Nepal into 7 provinces and 77 districts. The meeting of the Council of Ministers held on Bhadra 21, 2074 divided Nawalparasi and Rukum districts and increased them to 77 districts from 75 districts.
There are currently 77 districts in Nepal. All districts have their own culture, tradition and characteristics. Dolpa is the largest district of Nepal. The total area of this district is 7889 square kilometers. Bhaktapur is the smallest district with an area of 119 square kilometers. Rukum Kot is also known as the youngest district of Nepal.
