Career
After completing his School Leaving Certificate (SLC) in Biratnagar, Sugam moved to Kathmandu for further studies. Initially, he had no intention of pursuing a career in music. However, after meeting Sudin Pokharel, also known as DA69, his perspective shifted. They recorded their first song, Ma Maya Garchu, at NAAD Studio in 1995, but it failed to gain popularity. Despite facing setbacks, they recorded another song, Payera Timilai Yesto Khusi Chhu, but it too was unsuccessful. Even after releasing their third song, Panchi, and seeing no success, Sugam and Sudin’s collaboration came to an end.
In 1997, after his early musical failures, Sugam began working as a librarian at Radio Sagarmatha, Nepal’s first community radio station. While working there, he also hosted a music program, which kept him close to the industry.
Sugam’s breakthrough came when he launched his solo career with the release of his album 1MB in 2001, featuring the song Sayad Mero Prita. His other songs like Feri Tyo Din, Kati Din Bitey, Maya Ko Baato, Samhalinchha Kaile Mann, and Timi Ma Bhanda established him as a pop star in Nepal. Over the years, he released albums such as Highiway, Sutra, Yatra, School Pathshala, and Sugam Song Geet.
Sugam also worked with various artists, including Sudin Pokhrel and “The Unity” band members like Asif Shah and Aidray. In 2021, he became one of the judges for the fourth season of the reality show Nepal Idol.
